(Yes, you CAN rev a Pontiac, IF everything is "right") the stock rods GOTTA go. For the higher revs, use 6.8" BBC rods (we use Eagle).

All it takes is 9.5:1 or higher compression, a good set of heads, a good cam, and all the bolt-ons. 400s put out a lot of power and torque. A lot more than a similarly built 350. The 400 kind of reminds me of my 5.0. Web2016-02-01 Pontiac engines were cheap to build for decent horsepower when you could get engine blocks and heads at swap meets and salvage yards. Those parts are now scarce as Dodo birds. I built a 1969 Firebird 400 in 1971 -1972 and it consistently turned in the mid 12 second bracket with 8.50x 14/12" GoodYear wrinkle-wall slicks.
