Edit - Tru Oil IS a pain to apply between frets if it is a maple board. No problem on back & sides of a neck with rosewood or unfinished board. WebJan 12, 2013 · When preparing samples, try changing the sequence of the stain coats. Do one in order: shade 1 (allow to dry), shade 2 (allow to dry) then shade 3. Do the next in reverse order: 3, 2, 1. Then mix it up: 2, 3, 1 and finally 2, 1, 3. The appearance of each sample should be slightly (or noticeably) unique.

(that's assuming you did the same tru-oil method as I did, wet sanding from 220 grit upwards using the oil, getting gradually finer with the paper until you can polish it). WebDec 30, 2024 · apply tru oil in thin layers. layer 1, wait 1 hour. layer 2, wait 1 hour. layer 3, wait 24 hours. repeat until you start building up a base. the first few layer will soak into the wood. then after layers 1, 2, and 3, and waiting 24 hours, you do a light wet sanding to smooth out the orange peel effect.
